Youth Work (Certificate III to Certificate IV)

These courses provide students with the skills to work with and support young people, individually or in groups, with their social, emotional or financial situations. Students learn
skills in effective communication, advocacy, support, referral, and service delivery to young people.

In Perth - Mt Lawley, Joondalup, Thornlie and Midland offer both courses. In Regional W.A. - Albany offers both courses; Busselton and Broome offer the Cert III only.

A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus. A Federal Police Clearance is required prior to work placement and employment in most community services agencies.*

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

All students enter at Certificate III level. Entry into the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 10 with passes in English.


Special Requirements

> A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus - which must be finished in the first 6 weeks.

> A Federal Police Clearance is required prior to work placement and employment in most community services agencies.

What You'll Learn in Each Course

In the Certificate III, students learn skills in working with youth at risk, providing care and protection and working with culturally diverse clients. Students develop an understanding of the nature and provision of youth services, safety procedures and ethical behaviour required for working in the sector. As part of this qualification students may undertake a supervised work placement where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt.

The Certificate IV provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to plan, develop, implement and monitor programs designed to address the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people. They learn how to use community development methods, support young people to address their circumstances, and assist young people in crisis.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

As part of this course students will undertake a supervised or simulated work placement where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can gain entry level support/volunteer roles in community and residential youth work services or become a direct care worker in a community based or residential setting catering for young people.


Further Study & University Options

Studies at TAFE WA can be continued through to the Diploma of Community Welfare Work (see the Study Pathway diagram above).
