
About Us
The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.Visual Communication(Honours)
Introduction
These course rules and specifications apply to students commencing the BVC(Hons) in 2008. For students who commenced prior to 2008, the applicable course rules are those from the year of commencement. i.e. students who commenced in 2007 should refer to the 2007 Handbook.
Admission & Prerequisites
For entry to the BVC(Hons) degree students must:
- have completed a BVC degree or equivalent;
- have completed 75% of Art and Design Theory units with an average of a Credit or above in their third year units unless there are exceptional circumstances. One only of these units must be a Professional Practice unit;
- in the studio major, students are required to gain at least Distinctions in 75% of studio units, 50% of which must be in the third year of the major
Course Objectives
The aim of the Bachelor of Visual Communication is to offer an undergraduate award at honours level that provides students with a research pathway within the fields of Graphic Design and Visual Communication.
Career outcomes for graduates of the Bachelor of Visual Communication with Honours will include tertiary teaching and research in the field of visual communication and many employment opportunities within the design industry. These may include working as a designer in areas as diverse as publishing, typographic design, advertising, digital media, illustration, information design, interpretation design, corporate identity, animation, web design, interactive media and design writing.
The Bachelor of Visual Communication program objectives are to:
- enhance students' Visual Communication research capability, knowledge and competency
- familiarise students with research issues as they relate to the Graphic Design/Visual Communication industry
- refine and extend students' creative problem solving skills and abilities and to reflect on ideas and outcomes as part of the learning processes
- refine and practise a range of generic skills within the discipline
- further develop written and oral skills for a range of audiences
- further develop students' perspective of the global context of the discipline and the way it is practised and perceived
Articulation to/from Course
Graduates who have successfully completed the Bachelor of Visual Communication with Honours may apply for entry to a higher degree (Masters or PhD) in accordance with policies governing candidature for such admission.
Professional Recognition
Currently there is no accrediting professional body in the fields of graphic design and visual communication in Australia. However, similar degrees to this proposed degree, offered by other Universities in Australia, have been regarded as the traditional pathway into a research and professional career in these disciplines. The Graphic Design industry has a strong national body in Australia - the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA).
