Teachers Assistant & Special Needs (Certificate III to Cert IV)

Provides the students with the skills and knowledge to assist the teaching staff of schools and provide care and assistance for children from kindergarten to year 10. As part of the qualification students undertake a supervised work placement.

In Perth - Mt Lawley and Joondalup offer both courses, Armadale & Rockingham offer the Cert III only. In Regional W.A. - Albany and Broome offer the Cert III only.

Feb and July
A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus. Students are also required to have an Education Department Clearance and a “Work with Children Card” from the Department of Community Development (DCD).

  • Certificate IV in Teachers Assistant (Special Needs)

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

All students enter at Certificate III level. Entry into the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 10 with passes in English.


Special Requirements

What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Certificate III provides students with the skills to assist the teaching staff in schools and provide care and supervision for children from kindergarten to Year 10. Students learn how to implement planned education programs, assist students in their learning and development, contribute to the safety and health of students and support students with additional needs. They learn how to work with children and young people at risk of harm, work effectively with culturally diverse students, families and co-workers and gain an introductory knowledge into working with children with special needs.

The Certificate IV provides the practical skills and knowledge to assist the teaching staff in schools, and provide care and supervision for children with special learning and physical needs from kindergarten to Year 12. Students learn skills to manage challenging behaviours, assist in the classroom management and enhance the inclusion of the child with special needs.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

As part of both courses students undertake a supervised work placement where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can become a teacher's assistant working with students in mainstream classrooms or with students who have special needs.
