Diploma)This program provides the skills and knowledge for the collection of spatial data related to the set out and monitoring of engineering structures and mining operations. Students will learn about the operation of surveying equipment and software, including GPS, and the use of this equipment to carry out basic survey projects and the processing of survey data to produce computer aided plans.
Qualifications Available in this Program (depending on your entry & exit points)
General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites Entry into the Certificate IV requires the equivalent of Australian Year 11 with passes in English and Mathematics. Special Entry Requirements To enter these courses, a Western Australian "C" class driver's licence is required (being able to drive a manual transmission). What You'll Learn in Each Course The Certificate IV provides students with the basic practical skills and knowledge to assist in the collection of spatial data related to the set out and monitoring of engineering structures and mining operations. They will learn about the operation of surveying equipment and software, including GPS, and the use of this equipment to carry out basic survey projects and the processing of survey data to produce computer aided plans. The Diploma provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to carry out the role of a surveyor involved in the collection of spatial data related to the set out and monitoring of engineering structures, roads, railways and mining operations. Students will improve their skills in the operation of sophisticated surveying equipment and software, including GPS, and the use of this equipment to carry out complex survey projects, including open pit mine operations and the processing of survey data to produce computer aided engineering drawings and mine plans. The Advanced Diploma provides the practical skills and knowledge to carry out the role of a mine/engineering surveyor involved in the collection and analysis of spatial data related to the set out and monitoring of complex engineering structures, roads, railways and surface and underground mining operations. The Advanced Diploma satisfies the academic requirements for membership of the Spatial Sciences Institute (Engineering and Mining Commission). Career Outcomes Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can work survey assistant or technician, survey instrument hand, cartographic assistant, mapping technician or survey draftsperson. Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma satisfies the academic requirement for registration as an Authorised Mine Surveyor. Further Study & University Options Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma will allow guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Science (Mine & Engineering Surveying or Geographic Information Science) or Bachelor of Surveying at Curtin University in W.A. Students will receive around 300 credits at Curtin (equivalent to around 18 months) for the Bachelor of Science (Mine & Engineering Surveying) and 200 credits (around 12 months) for the Bachelor of Surveying. Students will receive 25 credits (1 unit) for the Bachelor of Science (Geographic Information Science).
