About Us
The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.Science (Natural Environment and Wilderness Management) with Honours

This 3-year (minimum) full-time or part-time course is offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart and Launceston (first year and a number of majors). The first year is also offered at the North-West Centre (limited number of subjects). The main intake to the Bachelor of Science is February, however a mid-year intake in July is also available.
Admission & Prerequisites
Minimum University entrance requirements. Students are encouraged to study some of the following subjects: MSP5C Mathematics Specialised 5C; MME5C Mathematics Methods 5C; MAP5C Mathematics Applied 5C; IT862 Computer Science 5C; CHM5C Chemistry 5C; GG833 Geography 5C; EVS846 Environmental Science 5C; PHY5C Physics 5C; BIO5C Biology 5C; PSC5C Physical Sciences 5C. Subject (unit) prerequisites apply to the study of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
Alternatively, students who successfully complete either KMA003 Mathematics Foundation Unit, KRA001 Chemistry Foundation Unit or KYA004 Physics Foundation Unit will qualify for entry to the Bachelor of Science.
Course Objectives
The course aims to:
- provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge, attitudes and skills in a range of basic physical, computational, mathematical, earth and life sciences;
- introduce students to scientific method through a range of disciplines;
- provide graduates with advanced knowledge in one or more of the science disciplines; and
- meet the needs of industry, business and government agencies.

Candidates for the BSc can major (3 years of studies) in one or two of the following fields of specialisation:
- Aquaculture
- Biochemistry
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Geography & Environmental Studies
- Geology
- Mathematics
- Microbiology/Immunology
- Physics
- Plant Science
- Psychology

Specimen courses
Candidates for the BSc can complete four-year specimen courses which are detailed in Schedule C in the following fields of specialisation:
- Economic Geology
- Forest Ecology
- Marine, Freshwater and Antarctic Biology (in teach-out, has been replaced by the Bachelor of Marine Science)
- Natural Environment and Wilderness Management
Schedule C should be read in conjunction with Schedules A and B.
The Specimen Courses, which follow the Bachelor of Science Schedule C, detail a number of three-year combinations. Many other combinations are possible. Students should note that all specimen courses must meet the degree requirements of the BSc which are summarised under 'Course structure'.
Bachelor of Science Advanced (Honours)
This is a special program that recognizes high achieving students. Entry to the program requires an ITI score of 90 or greater and in order to maintain a place in the direct entry program students will be required to be awarded the Dean's Roll of Excellence each year. Students not initially admitted to the program but who achieve the Dean's Roll of Excellence at the end of Year 1 will be invited to be part of the program. At the discretion of the Dean students transferring from other institutions may be eligible to enter the program.
Students participating in this program will be required to fulfill all the normal BSc and BSc(Hons) requirements but will be provided with opportunities to participate in various activities and seminars (normally available only to Honours year students) and to develop associations with Faculty academic staff in their major discipline areas. To challenge and engage outstanding students, students will need to complete at least 1 research-based unit, normally in Year 3.
