Retail Baking - Food Processing (Certificate I and III)This program provides a range of training in baking (including bread and pastry making). As part of the program the college will place the student in a local Perth bakery so they gain extensive hands-on experience in operating a bakery.
Qualifications Available in this Program (depending on your entry & exit points)
General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites Entry to the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 10 with passes in English or you can commence with the Certificate I. What You'll Learn in Each Course In the Certificate I, the student spends 3 months at the college undertaking introductory studies in baking. The college will then place the student in a Perth bakery so they can gain 3 months of extensive hands-on bakery experience. In the Certificate III, the student is trained in preparing a wide range of bakery products including baking bread, sponges, cakes, cookies, pastries, fillings and tortes. The theoretical and practical training is undertaken in the bakery and training restaurant located on campus. Work Experience, Activities & Events The TAFE college has its own bakery and also works very closely with the bakery franchises in Perth. Much of the theoretical and practical training is undertaken on campus however the students are also given the opportunity to undertaken work experience in a Perth bakery. Because of the huge shortage of bakers in Perth this work experience often leads on to paid part-time work for the student. The hospitality industry in Perth is booming at the moment and there is plenty of work available in this area for well trained and motivated students. Career Outcomes Graduates of the Cert III in Retail Baking can become assistants to bakers and pastry chefs. Depending on the stage of completion, graduates of the Cert IV or Diploma in Hospitality can obtain work as Duty, Floor or Restaurant Managers. Further Study & University Options Successful completion of the Cert III in Retail Baking will allow further study of the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Hospitality.
