
About Us
The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.Psychology
Introduction
(Coordinators: Hobart - Dr Nenagh Kemp (03) 6226 7534; Launceston - Dr Mathew Summers (03) 6324 3266) This is an integrated four-year full-time or eight-year part-time course offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart, Launceston. Only the first year of the program will be offered on the Cradle Coast Campus (Burnie).
Admission & Prerequisites
Applicants for the BPsych must meet minimum university entrance requirements. Satisfactory achievement in TCE Science and/or Mathematics subjects is desirable, eg, BIO5C Biology, MME5C Mathematics Methods or MAP5C Mathematics Applied, CHM5C Chemistry or PSC5C Physical Sciences, and may be required for students wishing to take first year elective units in Science and Health Science.
There will be a limited quota of places for entry to the first year of the program and applications will be ranked on the basis of academic merit, based on the ITI score. Further intakes at second year and at third year will also be based on academic merit. The number of places in the program will be limited to a maximum of 30 at each year level.
Course Objectives
The Bachelor of Psychology is an integrated four-year sequence of study which provides a thorough education in the scientific discipline of psychology and introduces students to the applications of psychology. Students also gain some educational breadth by studying other disciplines at least to the second year level. Advanced theoretical level study in core areas and applied topics in psychology together with advanced research training is undertaken in the fourth year of the program.
The program seeks to provide academic preparation of students in the scientist/practitioner model and equip graduates with the knowledge and skills for roles as provisionally registered psychologists. It provides graduates with a rigorous grounding in scientific methodology, critical thought and scholarly discourse.
Career Outcomes
The degree provides students with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate study in psychology leading to careers in research and neuroscience, and in professional specialisations such as clinical, health, educational, sport, organisational and forensic psychology.
Articulation to/from Course
Credit for relevant units will be given to transferring students.
