Master of Arts

Assessment (Internat.)

Competency based training is concerned with assisting people to gain specific competencies relevant to the purpose of their course of study. A student will be assessed by performing set tasks at specified standards, under prescribed conditions.
A range of assessment methods will be used to enable students to demonstrate competency.

Outline

In this Masters course, you will be offered the opportunity to develop research initiatives in studio-based areas such as Ceramics/3D, Drawing, Painting, Intermedia, Graphic Design and Printmaking. The program is divided into two basic components:
- Studio Practice - practical studio investigation that is examined by exhibition
- Theoretical - a written document of no less than 10,000 words, which illuminates or explains the thesis, and forms part of the overall examination procedure. There will also be tutorial and seminar sessions.

This degree is awarded on the basis of a thesis demonstrating 'command of the knowledge and skills pertinent to the area of investigation as well as a critical appreciation and understanding of the relationship of his/her own work to that of others'. Whereas in most cases the thesis will be a text reporting the candidate's research, the regulations also allow for a thesis to be creative work supported by an exegesis. (It is usual for candidates undertaking a Visual Arts MA to produce a practical thesis in the form of an exhibition supported by a written exegesis).

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities are available within the Visual Arts Industry sector as professionals in the chosen field of expertise. Additionally, work may be found in related fields such as public and commercial gallery curation, teaching and arts administration.

These supervisors, in conjunction with the candidate, will develop and expand the original 250-word proposal and agree upon appropriate meeting schedules for discussion and feedback to occur throughout the duration of the candidature.
