Maritime Operations - Deck Watchkeeper (2nd Mate), Shipmaster (Diploma to Adv Diploma)
Program Details Provides the academic knowledge required for seafarers to be a watch keeping officer (2nd mate) or shipmaster (chief mate, master) in the merchant navy. The course meets the STCW’95 code and upon completion students sits their oral exams at the college and receive their certificate of competency. The course is only suitable for students who are already employed in the merchant navy and have the relevant sea time. Qualifications Available in this Program

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.
General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites
Entry to the Certificate I requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with passes in Maths & Physics. Direct entry to the Diploma requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with AMSA approved sea service. Entry to the Advanced Diploma requires the completion of the Diploma with approved sea service.
What You'll Learn in Each Course
The Certificate I provides the first stage of training for a deck cadet embarking on a seagoing career. It includes the minimum pre sea safety training requirements set out in STCW95 as well as a grounding in shipboard operations and seamanship.
The Diploma provides the academic knowledge required for Seafarers to be a Watchkeeping Officer on any vessel of any size trading around the world. The course has been modified to meet the STCW ‘95 Code in consultation.
The Advanced Diploma provides the academic knowledge to prepare Deck Officers to take command or to be second in command of a merchant ship trading anywhere in the world. It has been modified to meet the STCW ‘95 Code in consultation with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
About the Maritime Training Centre
The Maritime Training Centre is situated in the heart of Western Australia’s major port of Fremantle and is equipped with the latest facilities including ship & training simulators, an aquaculture hatchery and a fleet of six vessels including the 18-metre training vessel “Maritime Image”. The Centre’s proximity to the waterfront, shipbuilding and repair facilities, cargo operations and Western Australian shipping companies has contributed to its reputation as one of the most innovative and industry-relevant maritime training facilities in Australia.
Career Outcomes
Completion of the Cert I leads to the issue of the Certificate and a statement of attainment for additional studies. Successful completion of the Diploma and an oral examination confers a Deck Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency which offers the graduate the ability to gain employment opportunities in the International Shipping Industry as a Watchkeeper on any sea-going vessel in any operating area. Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma confers a Chief Mate Certificate of Competency upon completion of an oral exam or Master Certificate of Competency depending on the amount of industrial experience held and an oral exam.
Further Study & University Options
Graduates of the Advanced Diploma may be able to enter the Graduate Diploma of Maritime Management at Notre Dame university.
