Marine Engineering - Watchkeeping, 2nd Engineer, Chief Engineer (Diploma to Adv Diploma)

Program Details  
Provides the skills and knowledge to seafarers wishing to upgrade their skills to a marine engineer (watch keeper or 2nd engineer, chief engineer). The course is only suitable for students who are already employed in the merchant navy and have the relevant workshop practice and sea time. The course meets the STCW’95 code and on completion the students receive the appropriate certificate of competency.

Program Components & Pathway

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry to the Diploma - Watchkeeping requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with passes in English, Maths & Physics or equivalent qualifications for Class 3/4 or Watchkeeping, having completed a cadetship and workshop practice approved by the relevant authorities and accepted by AMSA.

Entry to the Diploma - 2nd Engineer & Advanced Diploma require completion of the proceeding qualifications (see pathway diagram).


What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Diploma - Watchkeeping provides students with the skills required to maintain and operate marine engines, machinery and systems. This qualification is compliant with and provides the theoretical knowledge required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for the position of Marine Engineer Watchkeeper on board vessels with a propulsive power of 750 KW or more, operating in Australian and international waters.

The Diploma - 2nd Engineer provides skills required to maintain and operate marine engines, machinery and systems. It is compliant with STCW ‘95 and provides the theoretical knowledge required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for the position of Second Engineer on board vessels with a propulsive power of 3000 KW or more, operating in Australian coastal and international waters.

The Advanced Diploma provides training required to maintain and operate marine engines, machinery and systems. This qualification is compliant with STCW ‘95 and provides the theoretical knowledge required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for the position of Chief Marine Engineer on board vessels with a propulsive power of 3000 kW or more, operating in Australian coastal and international waters.


About the Maritime Training Centre

The Maritime Training Centre is situated in the heart of Western Australia’s major port of Fremantle and is equipped with the latest facilities including ship & training simulators, an aquaculture hatchery and a fleet of six vessels including the 18-metre training vessel “Maritime Image”. The Centre’s proximity to the waterfront, shipbuilding and repair facilities, cargo operations and Western Australian shipping companies has contributed to its reputation as one of the most innovative and industry-relevant maritime training facilities in Australia.


Career Outcomes

For the Diploma - Watchkeeping: Upon completion of required sea time and subject to meeting the requirements of AMSA licensing and regulatory requirements, the graduate will receive a STCW ‘95 Certificate of Competency as an Engineer Watchkeeper following an oral examination. This award is recognised internationally.

For the Diploma - 2nd Engineer: The Diploma is recognised by AMSA as part of the requirement for the award of a STCW ‘95 Certificate of Competency Class 2 following an oral examination and completion of AMSA approved sea time (at least 12 months). This award is recognised internationally.

For the Advanced Diploma: This course is recognised by AMSA as part of the requirement for the award of a STCW ‘95 Certificate of Competency as Engineer Class 1 following an oral examination. This award is recognised internationally.


Further Study & University Options

Graduates of the Advanced Diploma may be able to enter the Graduate Diploma of Maritime Management at Notre Dame university.
