About Us

The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.

Information System

Introduction

This on-campus, 3-year full-time or 6-year part-time course is offered at the Hobart and Launceston campuses. The first year of the course is also offered at the Cradle Coast Campus in Burnie.

Admission & Prerequisites

Possession of the University's basic admission requirements.
TCE Information Systems and Computer Science or their equivalent are useful background, but are not prerequisites for admission to the degree.
Students who have completed a Diploma of Business in a business discipline or a Diploma of Information Technology from a Tasmanian Institute of TAFE, and have been admitted to the course, may receive credit for up to six (6) units towards the degree. Students completing an Advanced Diploma in a related discipline may receive credit for up to ten units towards the degree. Depending on the course of study and the majors chosen, students may not be able to use all of the credit that has been granted, for example, credit for unspecified electives. The status of individual units is determined at the time of offer.
Applicants wishing to obtain credit for study already undertaken within another faculty, or an Australian or overseas tertiary institution should consult the Admission Guide for information on procedure.
In the case of international students, credit for previous study will be determined on application. English language skills will also need to be verified. International students must provide an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL score of 550 with a Test of Written English score of no less than 4.5. The test must not be more than 24 months old.

Course Objectives

The course aims to:

  • provide a professional degree that will graduate people able to fulfil key roles in the IT and related industries, and who will liaise between IT personnel and other professional and industrial personnel;
  • produce graduates who have a good understanding of roles of IT in society, in organisations, and for individuals, and who know that IT is a powerful factor for change in modern society;
  • provide the community, particularly Tasmania, with graduates who are well equipped to deal with information technology and develop information infrastructures, both in the public and private spheres;
  • produce graduates with knowledge, skills and understanding of: (a) the relationships of information and information technology to organisational needs; (b) current management practice in the development of information systems, their use and associated policy formulation and analysis; (c) the value of research, critical thinking and effective communication in the management of information systems.
  • produce graduates who have well developed professional skills in such areas as interpersonal communication, working in teams, and technical report writing.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Information Systems could expect to find employment as a business analyst, database analyst, systems analyst, IT project manager, IT manager, information manager, database administrator, IT administrator or manager, telecommunications manager, IT consultant, electronic commerce or electronic business consultant, web developer, webmaster.

Professional Recognition

Associate membership of the Australian Computer Society.

Miscellaneous Information

Combined degree with Law

Students enrolled for the BIS may apply at the end of Year 1 to enter combined studies with the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. The combined degree takes five years full time. Quotas apply. The first year of the combined degree is available at Launceston. Students must complete the combined degree at the Hobart campus. Students with a TE score of 92 or above may apply for direct admission to the BIS-LLB degree (see Section Faculty of Law section of the Handbook).

The unit LAW121 Introduction to Law and LAW122 Legal Systems are compulsory in Year 1 for those intending to transfer to the combined degree. The first year law units are also offered in Launceston. Students must transfer to Hobart to complete the degree.

Combined degrees with Business, Computing, Fine Arts, Music and Teaching.

There are also four year combined degree programmes availablewith Business, Music, Fine Arts and Teaching.
