Graphic Design - Print, Publishing & Packaging (Cert IV to Adv. Dip)

Program Details 

This course provides you with the skills to produce and communicate innovative graphic design solutions for use in print, packaging, advertising, illustration and publishing. You will work with increasing independence pursuing your own aims, interests and vision in your chosen area of specialisation in advertising, corporate or illustrative design. As part of the course you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will apply the skills and knowledge learned.

Program Components & Pathway

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry into the Certificate IV - Advanced Diploma requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with passes in English or completion of the Certificate III in Design Fundamentals.


What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Certificate IV provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to produce art, and layouts of wording for reproduction in print and electronic media. Students learn skills to produce strong image concepts, problem solve and communicate ideas as well as create and execute design concepts and present finished artwork using a combination of traditional studio media and digital technologies.

The Diploma further develops practical skills and knowledge to produce and communicate creative graphic design images for reproduction in print and digital media. Students learn skills in business planning and management for design projects along with how to work with available resources, technologies and within the demands of the graphic design industry. Students choose to study from two of the following areas: packaging, corporate design, advertising, illustrative design, digital media and web design.

The Advanced Diploma further develops the practical skills and knowledge to produce innovative graphic design solutions for use in print, packaging, advertising, illustration and publishing. Students are encouraged to source opportunities, design, produce and work either independently or collaboratively in the creation of innovative graphic products. They can choose their specialisation from advertising, corporate or illustrative design. Students can also choose from additional subjects in digital design which cover packaging design and technologies, corporate branding, advertising, copywriting, illustration and web page design and development.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

As part of this qualification they will undertake a supervised work placement where they can apply the skills and knowledge learnt. In this course students are encouraged to source opportunities, design, produce and work either independently or collaboratively in the creation of innovative graphic products. Learners will work with increasing independence, pursuing their own aims, interests and vision in their chosen area of specialisation, and broaden their understanding of the nature, role and practices of the designer in our community.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can gain employment in entry level positions in graphc design, work as a freelance designers and ultimately as print and graphic designers in design practices.


Further Study & University Options

Studies at TAFE WA can be continued through to the Advanced Diploma level (see the Study Pathway diagram above). Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma will allow guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Arts (Creative Advertising Design) at Curtin University in W.A. Students will receive around 300 credits at Curtin (equivalent to around 12 months of the Bachelor degree).
