Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary Education)

Teaching can be one of the most rewarding careers for individuals who enjoy working with children. However, some people may not have considered teaching as a profession until after they have completed an undergraduate degree.

To prepare as a secondary teacher, you will focus on two key learning areas, minor to year 10 and one major discipline to year 12. In choosing your teaching areas, you need to consider combinations that are in demand in secondary schools. At JCU you can qualify to teach in the following secondary school subjects:

*

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies
 Biology

Chemistry
 Drama

Visual Arts
 English

Geography
 Health and Physical Education

Languages
 Legal Studies

Marine Science
 Mathematics

History
 Multi-strand Science

Music
 Physics

Information and Communication Technologies
Studies of Society and the Environment

The Graduate Diploma provides the perfect opportunity for graduates to qualify for a profession that is recognised throughout Australia and the world, in one year of full time study. It is an intensive program meeting the requirements of the Queensland College of Teachers for registration as a teacher. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of achievement in their undergraduate degree and be committed to undertaking continuous professional development throughout their teaching career.

The Graduate Diploma of Education programs commence prior to the start of Study Period 1. The on-campus program orientation for the Primary and Secondary majors commence in Townsville on the 28 January, 2009, and the on-campus program orientation for the Years 1-9 major commences in Cairns on the 4 February, 2009.

Applications for this course are to be received by 31 October for the following year. Please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Officer (see below) for confirmation of these dates.
