Graduate Certificate in Australian Immigration Law and Practice

WHY STUDY THE GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION LAW AND PRACTICE AT VICTORIA UNIVERSITY SYDNEY AUSTRALIA?

This course provides an understanding of Australian Immigration Law and Practice. It enables existing practitioners (accounting, legal and others) to expand their areas of practice.
A student who achieves a 50% pass rate in each unit of the common assessment task and an overall of 50% in each of the four prescribed units of study in the Graduate Certificate in Australian Immigration Law and Practice, is eligible to apply for registration as a migration agent. The University will notify MARA that a student has obtained a mark of 50% or above in each of the four units of study.

ELIGIBILITY
  • VU Sydney: This program is only available to Australian Citizens only.
  • VU Melbourne: This program is available to Australian Citizens and International Students.

    Many students who have sucessfully completed this course and passed the prescribed MARA requirements become Registered Migration Agents. Others find employment with Law firms or larger migration companies, (public and private), or work for voluntary organisations.

    COURSE OBJECTIVES

    This course aims to provide students with an understanding of Australian Immigration Law and Practice and will enable existing Practitioners, Accounting, Legal and others to expand their areas of practice. Students who successfully complete the appropriate combination of units will be eligible to practise as a registered Australian Migration Agent.

    COURSE STRUCTURE

    This course is offered on a full-time basis over one semester and part-time basis over two semesters. The postgraduate units of study carry a value of 12 credit points. Each student must obtain 48 credit points through academic study to graduate.

    • BLO5606: Australia’s Visa System
    • BLO5607: Visa Compliance, Cancellation and Review
    • BLO5608: Applied Migration Law and Practice
    • * examples only and may be substituted for other relevant subjects
    STUDY REQUIREMENTS

    Many postgraduate students have work, family and other commitments. It is important that you plan your time commitment to this course when you enrol. As a guide to planning, each unit of study requires between 90 to 120 hours of study, including class attendance, assessment and learning activities.

    Work, family, travel and personal commitments are not acceptable reasons for granting extensions or special consideration, other than in exceptional circumstances.
    When planning your enrolment you need to decide whether you have the available time to commit to your study load.

    ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

    To qualify for admission into this course, applicants will normally hold an Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent. Alternatively, applicants who can demonstrate the capacity to study successfully at a postgraduate level will be admitted into the program. If applicants do not meet this requirement, they may be able to study Professional Certificate of Immigration Law as an introduction to the course.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
    • Overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6
    • Internet-based TOEFL score of 92 with no section score less than 22
    • Computer-based TOEFL score of 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) score of 5
    • EAP University Preparation at English Language School in Sydney (ELSIS)
