Fashion and Textile Design (Certificate IV - Advanced Diploma)

Program Details  
Provides students with the skills and knowledge to design, construct and adapt fashion garments and accessories. The course is very practical and has a reputation of being one of the most highly regarded fashion and textile courses in Australia.

  • Diploma of Fashion & Textile Design
  • Advanced Diploma of Art & Design - Fashion & Textile Design


Program Components & Pathway

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry into the Certificate IV requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with passes in English or completion of the Certificate III in Design Fundamentals.


What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Certificate IV provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to design, construct and adapt fashion garments and accessories. Students learn skills in research, concept and design development. They also learn about the history of fashion and textiles, where to source textiles and marketing practices.

The Diploma further develops the practical skills and knowledge in fashion design and construction. Students undertake projects where they apply creative, critical and visual judgement to produce a range of solutions using a wide range of materials and styles. They will also have the opportunity to incorporate individual expression of contemporary fashion design concepts. Students develop skills in illustration and drawing, computing, visualising, and design and learn about both interior and fashion textiles and will practice these skills in a workshop environment.

The Advanced Diploma further develops the practical skills and knowledge to design, construct and adapt fashion garments and accessories. Students develop skills in design, illustration techniques, workshop methods, computer applications and research. This qualification also gives a sound understanding of the various technical and creative aspects of working as an independent and entrepreneurial fashion designer. As part of this qualification students undertake a creative studio activity where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

This program includes the ability to undertake work experience during the course; learning through practical workshops and projects; visits to fashion designers & retailers; portfolio creation & display.


Career Outcomes

Depending upon the stage of completion, graduates of these courses can become Fashion and Textile Designers, Magazine Contributors, Illustrators and Visualisers, Stylists, Colourists and Clothing Retailers.


Further Study & University Options

Studies at TAFE WA can be continued through to the Advanced Diploma level. Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma will allow guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Arts (Fashion & Textile Design) at Curtin University or the Bachelor of Contemporary Arts (Contemporary Fashion) at Edith Cowan University with up to 18 months credit.
