About Us

The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.

Enviroment Science

Introduction

This three-year full-time or six-year part-time course is offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Launceston.

Admission & Prerequisites

Minimum university entrance requirements plus TCE Level 5 chemistry (CHM5C) and mathematics (MAP5C, MME5C or MSP5C), or equivalent, including appropriate enabling courses offered by the University of Tasmania.

Course Objectives

The Bachelor of Environmental Science is a multi-disciplinary degree combining the disciplines of biology, chemistry, ecology and physical geography complemented with studies in environmental policy and management. The Environmental Science program offered at the University of Tasmania has a strong focus on aquatic science, chemical monitoring and environmental management and overarches a number of the University's theme areas, particularly the Environment, and Antarctic and Marine Studies theme areas. The degree also provides a nexus with research programs in the Schools of Aquaculture (marine environment, TAFI), Chemistry (environmental chemistry, ACROSS), and Geography and Environmental Studies (coastal and catchment management, forest ecology and agroforestry).
This course specifically aims to provide students with competencies, skills, knowledge and awareness, which will prepare them for employment as environmental scientists. The program also develops a wide range of general abilities including communication, analytical and problem solving skills that are widely valued by employers.

Career Outcomes

The degree will prepare students for a wide range of careers in industry, government, private consulting firms, non-profit organisations and educational institutions performing duties such as environmental and natural resource management, pollution monitoring and environmental impact assessments, water and waster water management, and policy analysis and implementation. An educational background in environmental science will be attractive to a wide range of employers given the impact of environmental issues on most employment sectors.


Articulation to/from Course

Credit for relevant units will be given to transferring students.
