English for Academic Purposes

These courses are intended to prepare students for study in TAFE, university and vocational programmes.  In contrast to our general English classes, the focus is on the sorts of English skills people need for tertiary study.  In EAP, students can expect to cover all of the following topics:

•    Reading academic texts
•    Essay writing skills
•    Listening and note-taking for lectures and tutorials
•    Academic research skills (i.e. using libraries and the Internet for research)
•    Compiling bibliographies
•    Tutorial presentations
•    Exam techniques
•    Critical thinking
•    Academic conventions for presenting written and spoken material
•    Western attitudes to study and knowledge

As part of their assessment, students will complete at least two university standard essays, do a class presentation and a research project.  In addition, four progress tests are undertaken during the course.  The final grade for the course is determined by the results from all assignments and tests.
