COREQUISITE: XA 202 and XA 203 DURATION: 10 weeks CRICOS Code 050429A DESCRIPTION: This unit focuses on the skills that are required for success in tertiary study in Australia, specifically academic writing, research skills, text analysis, oral presentations and self-study skills. OBJECTIVES: Knowledge: The unit aims to: • Enhance students’ ability to read and interpret academic materials in a systematic and productive fashion • Make students aware of the essential elements of argument analysis • Expand students’ knowledge of the formal languages and processes for reading oral rhetoric, the internet, photographs, and literary style in a critical manner • Demonstrate the conventions of good academic writing such as clarity, consistency, convincing arguments, originality and referencing • Develop students’ knowledge of research resources such as the library, the internet, journals, databases, books, and visual materials Skills: This unit aims to: • Enable students to access knowledge from a variety of sources in a productive way and in a manner that demonstrates their comprehension, analytical and critical skills • Develop students’ ability to "read" or interpret arguments and images • Enhance students’ skills to express their ideas and research findings according to academic conventions • Develop students’ presentation skills using appropriate referencing techniques • Enable students to develop as independent learners and work effectively in group situations Attitudes and Values: This unit aims to: • Foster students’ awareness of the role of critical and analytical skills in a range of academic forums. • Develop an appreciation of the importance of original thought in academic discourse and the appropriate means for acknowledging the prior work of other scholars.
