EAP (English for Academic Purposes)

LEVEL:                                     Upper-Intermediate

LENGTH OF COURSE:              10 weeks

OBJECTIVES:
This course is aimed at assisting international students wishing to enter an undergraduate or graduate program.  It aims to improve the students' proficiency in English as well as prepare them for the demands of academic study in the tertiary education system in Australia.

Structure and Articulation with other courses

The course is structured to cover a range of skills required for academic study, including English language, critical analysis, academic orientation and oral and written genres.

Students with satisfactory progress (80%) can enter undergraduate and graduate programs at AMI Education in affiliation with University of Ballarat.

OUTCOMES:

At the end study in EAP students should be able to:

Speaking

  • communicate effectively in small groups
  • speak with accuracy and fluency
  • give a group presentation

Listening

  • take notes effectively
  • listen for main ideas and details

Reading

  • skim and scan
  • read for main ideas
  • analyse text, graphs and statistical representation
  • recognise vocabulary and terminology in academic textbooks and assignment tasks

Writing

  • write a well constructed paragraph with a topic and controlling idea
  • write an argument genre essay
  • take effective notes from written texts

Computer Skills

  • use word processing for written assignments
  • research topics of general interest

Study Skills

  • study independently
  • compare learning in different contexts
  • deal with different genres in oral and written discourse
  • think critically

Research Skills

  • research topics in a variety of academic disciplines
  • research using the library, internet, audio-visual materials
  • write a bibliography

ASSESSMENT FOR EAP:

  1. Continuous assessment 40%
    Throughout the course, the teacher evaluates the students' progress by monitoring completion of homework and set class tasks and participation in class discussions.
  1. Formal Assessment 60%
    Students will be evaluated on set tasks set out below:

    • Summarising and referencing task
    • Essay
    • Class debate
    • Lecture listening task
    • Group Oral Presentation

Students who successfully complete EAP (80%) are eligible for entry into University of Ballarat's undergraduate and graduate programs at AMI Education.
