Doctor of Philosophy - Arts, Humanities and Education

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a program of supervised research and study that may be undertaken in a range of fields. Your research will lead to the submission of a thesis that makes a significant original contribution to knowledge. This contribution can be in the form of new knowledge or of significant and original adaptation, application and interpretation of existing knowledge. The program is governed by the program rules for masters degrees by research, which provides details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis.

What am I studying?

Humanities, psychology and social work are areas of study that focus on human society, individuals and their relationships, human culture and the contemporary world. They explore how humans recognise, record and debate human practises, meanings and values, including the human condition and how society operates.

More specifically, humanities, psychology and social work incorporates disciplines such as psychology, social work, writing, history, geography and environment, as well as professional communication and journalism leading to a diverse range of careers.  Study in humanities, psychology and social work develops life long skills such as critical thinking, research and investigation, communication, design and planning which can assist in all careers and in day-to-day life, in fact,   many of Australia’s politicians have studied similar programs.

Prerequisites

You may be considered for admission to candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy if you:

• have been awarded a masters degree either by research or with a substantial element of research work within it, from a University or any other approved institution; or
• have qualified for the award of a bachelors degree in an appropriate discipline with first-class or second-class honours conferred by a university or any other approved institution; or
• hold qualifications from an institution of tertiary education, which are deemed to be equivalent to either of the two points listed above.

Career Opportunities

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification is highly regarded in research roles or in jobs where highly specialised knowledge is required.  It is normally a prerequisite for a permanent academic position in many universities. A PhD is the penultimate academic degree that can be undertaken.
