Diploma of Spatial Information Services

Duration: 2 Years

Note: one year of study is equivalent to not less than 36 weeks of instruction.

Course Type: Training Package Qualification

Entry Requirements: Students must show the academic and personal qualities necessary to undertake tertiary studies. This means the satisfactory completion of Year 12 or equivalent and the ability to study in English demonstrated by an IELTS score of 5.5.

Expected Employment Outcome Example: Spatial information services involve the collection, storage, manipulation, analysis and display of spatial data and information, which can be related to a location on earth. The information can be used for the purpose of planning and implementing the efficient administration and development of natural and built resources. Training in this area provides the necessary skills and knowledge for graduates to work as Surveyors or Geographic Information System (GIS) operators/technicians in a wide variety of areas where spatial data is used in the decision making process including planning; land development; marketing; mining; resource development; primary industry; and local government.

Computer science; collecting spatial data; mobile computing & mapping; advanced global positioning systems (GPS); geographical information systems (GIS); remote sensing and image analysis; computer aided drafting (CAD); mathematics; surveying; map design & production; participating in process improvement; storing and retrieving spatial data; RDBMS; organising and participating in field expeditions; managing OH&S procedures; undertaking spatial projects; metadata management; land management; photogrammetry; contract management; web development; computer programming and spatial analysis; and visualisation. A variety of leading software applications are used.
