Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE/English)

Course Aims

The couse aims to train bilingual persons in the role, theory, ethics and
practice of interpreting:.
• To provide them with the skills and knowledge to interpret
competently at the Paraprofessional level.
• To achieve accreditation as Paraprofessional interpreters.
• It also aims to train paraprofessional interpreters or equivalent, in the
role, theory, ethics and practice of interpreting to achieve accreditation
as professional interpreters commensurate with international standards
and industry requirements.

Course Structure

Participants need to complete six (6) units of competency.
00271 Interpret dialogues
00272 Simultaneously interpret dialouges, speeches and presenta
tions
00273 Integrate bi-cultural aspects in the behaviour and communi
cation process
00274 Communicate effectiveley with professionals, clients and
others
00275 Maintain effective management practices
00276 Mantain ongoing professional and personal development

• Hands-on practice

• Discussion groups

Assessment Methods
Competence will be assessed by a range of methods aiming at
maximum flexibility and customization to address specific needs and
leaning situations
• Observation of ongoing activities
• Short formal and informal tests
• Presentation of Portfolios
• Role plays
• Observation of group discussion
Formal assessment takes place at the end of each term for each
module:
Formal written and/or oral test
Interpreting practice test

Duration

Full-time 1 year

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent AND;
International students: English language skills at least equivalent to
IELTS 5.5 OR IELTS 5.0 with maximum 20 weeks ELICOS course OR
EAP OR Advanced level at Ozford English Language Centre.

Requirements to Recieve the Qualification

Successful completion of this course provides student with the entry
requirements to Advanced Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE/English)
