Diploma of Interpreting and Translating

  • Duration: 1 year
  • Note: one year of study is equivalent to not less than 36 weeks of instruction.
  • Course Type: Accredited Course
  • Entry Requirements: Satisfactory completeion of Year 12 or overseas equivalent and reached the standard of bilinguual competency, both written and oral: language other than English - assumed native or near-native proficency; English - IELTS 6.0 (Academic preferred) with a minimum score of 6.0 in the speaking and listening bands OR English bridging course with a Credit grade.

  • Expected Employment Outcome Example: Communication is the key word in the languages sector, whether it's written, oral or visual. Studying a language will not only provide you with knowledge and skills in the language itself, but also an insight into the values, attitudes and customs of other cultural groups. Language qualifications at TAFE SA aim to provide practical, vocationally oriented and culturally appropriate skills that will enable you to communicate effectively in written and oral forms. Many students learn a language in conjunction with another course or employment.
  • Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.
  • Skills Covered:
    The aim of this course is to train bilingual students in the role, theory, ethics and practice of interpreting. The course will also provide students with an introduction to the process of translation to provide a solid basis for further translation study. Languages offered vary each year. Subjects may include: · interpret dialogues · effective communication · bicultural aspects in the communication process · translate texts from one language into another language · oral and written English skills · develop contextual language skills within Australian society · business documents · local and tourism knowledge
