Diploma of Geoscience

  • Entry Requirements: Students must show the academic and personal qualities necessary to undertake tertiary studies. This means the satisfactory completion of Year 12 or equivalent and the ability to study in English demonstrated by an IELTS score of 5.5 is essential.

  • Expected Employment Outcome Example: Australia's world-class minerals industry encompasses exploration, mining and processing of minerals to basic mineral commodity stage. It is acknowledged internationally for its capability - from exploration to mine completion, innovative equipment and services, and associated research. With exports worth $54.7 billion, the combined exploration, mining, processing and energy sectors led all other Australian industry sectors. This course provides fundamental training for employment as a mineral exploration field assistant, pit technician and underground sampler. Employment opportunities are also available in geotechnical, foundation/construction; mineral exploration; waterwell; and environmental drilling.
  • Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.
  • Skills Covered:
    Acts and regulations; introduction to computer communications; applied operations for spreadsheets; basic and advanced operations in word processing; basic mineralogy; computer hardware fundamentals; drilling operations; environmental management; extractive operations; field project in geoscience; field project organisation; geochemistry; geological - history and processes; geology - economic / hydro / structural / petroleum / and soils and engineering; geophysics; geoscience - data processing / drafting / and surveying; introductory mathematics; managing grievances and disputes; mining operations field camp and field camp support; petrology; presenting reports; research project in geoscience; scientific database and spreadsheet applications; statistics; methods of sampling; and work placement.
