Diploma of Community Welfare Work


Course Duration: 72 weeks of scheduled classes (104 weeks including holidays)

Course Description:

The Diploma of Community Welfare Work is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and understanding to work in the community welfare sector in service delivery to clients, in a wide variety of settings. On successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to provide a holistic approach to client needs including social, emotional, psychological and practical support. They also develop knowledge and skills of specific client needs and the operation of the community welfare sector.
Careers in community welfare work are both demanding and highly rewarding. Those seeking to work in community welfare should enjoy working with people and understand the nature of social disadvantage. Desirable qualities for community welfare work are tolerance, empathy, and flexibility and well developed interpersonal skills.
The community welfare sector provides successful students with a wide variety of career opportunities. The course has national accreditation, which is recognised throughout Australia.
Opportunities for further study exist for successful students who may be eligible for credits in other specialist Certificate IV and degree courses. Students can negotiate these with the relevant institutes.

Entry Requirements

Entry into Certificate and Diploma programs requires an English level, at least equivalent to IELTS 5.5.

Schedule

The course is delivered over two years full-time study during which 19 units must be completed. The academic year follows the state school calendar providing holiday breaks that align to school holidays. Students attend classes for approximately 3 days a week.

Mode of study and assessment

This course is delivered in a classroom based environment with practical requirements simulated to reflect the training requirements. The delivery of training will include a mixture of classroom delivery, group discussions, and individual research.
