Diploma of Community Welfare Work

Duration: 2 Years

Note: one year of study is equivalent to not less than 36 weeks of instruction.

Course Type: Training Package Qualification

Entry Requirements: Students must show the academic and personal qualities necessary to undertake tertiary studies. This would mean completion of relevant vocational education and training Certificate III course or successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent and the ability to study in English demonstrated by an IELTS score of 5.5.

Expected Employment Outcome Example: Community service workers are employed in many fields. Graduates may find themselves working in community development; community legal centres; women's or youth refuges; residential aged care services and community aged care services; and disability services including residential services, recreation programs, educational support services, advocacy, employment support services and respite services. There are also employment opportunities for graduates in social housing; out of home care settings; youth services; juvenile residential facilities; alcohol and drug services; advocacy services; mental health (non clinical) settings; and aged or disability respite services.

Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

Skills Covered:
Co-ordinating the work environment; developing and implementing a community development strategy; developing and implementing policy; developing new networks; developing, facilitating and monitoring all aspects of case management; developing, implementing and promoting effective communication techniques; OH&S; managing the organisation's finances, accounts and resources; meeting statutory and organisational information requirements; planning and conducting group activities; reflecting and improving upon professional practice; responding holistically to client issues; undertaking research activities; working with clients holistically; plus electives.
