OVERVIEW

The Diploma of Information Technology (Website Development) prepares students for a career as a professional website developer and programmer.

The course teaches the technical and practical skills required for designing, programming and administering dynamic e-commerce enabled websites. In this rapidly evolving field the professional developer must be proficient with current web programming languages and up-to-date with the latest database techniques.

This course has been designed to fulfill this aim and to give students the knowledge to be able to utilise key technologies related to the development, maintenance and administration of web based information and e-commerce transactions. The delivery style allows students to put into practice in the classroom the skills they are learning. At the end of the course students should have the skills required of a Professional Website Developer, and the confidence to put their skills into practice in the workplace.

COURSE SUBJECTS

The Diploma of Information Technology (Website Development) contains 10 subjects. Each subject is designed as a self-standing professional course, covering a specific IT subject in detail. Each module consists of a specified number of hours, which may include lectures, tutorials, practical exercises, assignments, and directed private study.

COURSE CONTENT

DATABASE MODELLING
This subject provides students with the knowledge and skills to model business requirements in order to create a baseline database design. It focuses on the use of Object Role Modelling (ORM) and the ORM modelling tool in Microsoft Visual Studio.NET Enterprise Architect. Students will also learn the database modelling process and how ORM relates to Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams.

INTRODUCTION TO C# PROGRAMMING WITH MICROSOFT .NET
This subject provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to design and develop object-oriented applications for the Web and Microsoft Windows by using Microsoft Visual C#.NET and the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET development environment. The course focuses on building highly functional Web and Windows solutions and Web Services by using Microsoft Visual C# .NET and the Microsoft .NET Framework. This is the first course in the Visual C#.NET curriculum and will serve as the entry point for other .NET courses.

STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO:

• Explain the .NET platform.
• Configure and use Visual Studio .NET.
• Program with C#.
• Implement methods, Implement encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism in C#.,
• Use C# within the .NET Framework.
• Use Microsoft ADO.NET to access and manipulate data in a database.
• Create feature-rich Windows-based applications.
• Create a Web application by using Web Forms.
• Use XML Web services in a C# application.
• Experiment with more advanced features of C#.

SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
This subject provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to design Microsoft.NET-connected solutions to business problems. After completing this subject.

PROGRAMMING PROJECT
Students will undertake the analysis, design and coding for a given business scenario. The project will allow students to integrate the database, programming, analysis and design skills learnt in the preceding subjects.

DEVELOPING MICROSOFT ASP.NET WEB APPLICATIONS USING VISUAL STUDIO.NET.
This subject will teach C# programmers and beginning Web developers the fundamentals of Web application site implementation by using Microsoft ASP.NET and Microsoft C#. This course focuses on using the Microsoft Visual Studio®.NET environment and the Microsoft.NET platform to create an ASP.NET Web application that delivers dynamic content to a Web site. Students will learn how to explain the Microsoft.NET Framework and ASP.NET, Create a component in Visual Basic.NET or C#. Create an ASP.NET Web application project by using Visual Studio.NET. Add server controls to an ASP.NET Web Form. Create and populate ASP.NET Web Forms. Add functionality to server controls that are on an ASP.NET Web Form. Use the Trace and Debug objects that are provided with Visual Studio.NET. Use validation controls to validate user input. Create a user control. Access data by using the built-in data access tools that are available in Visual Studio NET. Use Microsoft ADO.NET to access data in an ASP.NET Web application. Accomplish complex data access tasks from an ASP.NET Web application. Access Extensible Markup Language (XML) data and read it into a DataSet. Call an XML Web service from an ASP.NET Web application and incorporate the returned data into a Web application. Store application and session data by using a variety of methods. Configure and deploy an ASP.NET Web application. Secure an ASP.NET Web application by using a variety of technologies.

WEB DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Students should gain an understanding of how to design and implement commerce-driven websites; identify customer needs; monitor customer usage patterns; determine order processes and service after sales; and consider how e-business solutions can increase sales.

The skills covered can be used by network server administrators, firewall administrators, systems administrators, application developers, IT security officers, Webmasters, business developers, and marketing managers. The subject teaches students how to conduct business online and how to manage the technological issues associated with constructing an electronic-commerce website.

Students will implement a genuine transaction-enabled business-to-consumer website, examine strategies and products available for building electronic-commerce sites, examine how such sites are managed, and explore how they can complement an existing business infrastructure. Students get hands-on experience implementing the technology to engage cardholders, merchants, issuers, payment gateways and other parties in electronic transactions.

PHP AND MYSQL
Students should gain an understanding of how to create database backed web applications using PHP and MySQL. The subject introduces the PHP programming tool kit and the MySQL RDBMS. The subject covers software installation, language syntax and data structures, flow control routines, built-in functions, and best practices.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
IT professionals, whether in corporate departments or IT service organizations, increasingly operate outside traditional boundaries defined by technical skills. Successful project managers must grasp enterprise-wide business issues, consult effectively with users in a variety of functions, and work effectively in cross-functional project teams. The subject is a practical guide to successful project management. The subject deals with the key issues of project management and presents different solutions.

BUSINESS CONTINUITY AND RECOVERY PLANNING
Organizations of all sizes and industries depend upon information availability. More people need more access to more data—and more quickly. Continuous uptime is no longer a luxury; it’s now the price of admission. This subject identifies key building blocks required for information availability, reliability and continuity. Reliability focuses on maintaining availability at all times.” Continuity provides the mechanisms needed to run smoothly in spite of a business interruption. The subject deals with the key issues of reliability and continuity and presents different solutions

PRIVACY COMPLIANCE
New privacy provisions in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act) affecting private sector organisations came into effect on 21 December 2001. The new privacy provisions aim to ensure that organisations that hold information about people handle that information responsibly. They also give people some control over the way information about them is handled. The subject deals with the key issues affecting IT professionals.

• IELTS LEVEL 5.5 (if English is not your first language).
• Australian year 10 or equivalent. Eg. G.C.E. O LEVEL
• Certificate II In Information Technology
