Academia Language School was started by Joseph and Magda Alexander in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1969. Since then, Academia has raised to become the largest language institute on Hawaii. Academia teachers now gives lessons in over 25 different languages at our school, in corporate offices, and in government facilities.

Custom Designed Corporate Programs

Academia has years of experience in customizing language services to fit special needs. We have worked with a wide variety of businesses to develop curricula to meet unique language needs.

By developing tailored programs we have enabled commercial customers to meet the needs of their international clientele.

We work with the customer to determine the needs of the particular industry and the particular service outlet. A typical beginning course for tourism workers will include a vocabulary of 500 words and phrases in the target language. The words will include general nouns and verbs as well as terms relative to the specific service be it a hotel, a transportation service or an entertainment establishment.

A beginning course will have an overview of the grammar and an introduction to the customs and cultural norms of native speakers of this language. At higher levels, more vocabulary and conversation skills are developed.

For the construction industry we have developed vocabulary lists of tools and construction verbs and phrases. We've provided a practical introduction to tenses (i.e. "I will pour the cement." "I have poured the cement.") and taught the difference between questions and commands.

For the aviation industry we can have taught the vocabulary of air traffic control and the words and phrases of the US aeronautics industry along with basic grammar and conversation.

Customers can meet with our curriculum specialist to describe their needs and develop a syllabus with weekly objectives or they can review one of our standard programs.

US Government

We have trained US government personnel for a wide variety of diplomatic functions and military requirements. We have taught everything from beginner programs for large pre-deployment groups to tailored one on one programs to bring personnel to native speaker level.

We are on the GSA government bid list and are able to respond to bid contracts for Hawaii and the Western regions. We are listed as a subcontractor with the major language instruction providers for the Department of Defense and the Department of State.

We can and have provided immersion and iso-immersion classes in Hawaii and abroad. We have relations with sister schools in most locations where major world languages are spoken. A typical iso-immersion program will consist of living quarters where the target language will prevail with food, entertainment and daily conversation replicating the desired language environment.
