About Us

The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.

The status of individual units is determined at the time of offer.

Faculty also offers direct credit for its awards. For example, a BBus or BIS student wishing to transfer to the BEc with credit and vice versa receives direct credit. Applicants wishing to obtain credit for study already undertaken within another faculty, or an Australian or overseas tertiary institution, should consult the Admission Guide for information on procedure.
