Building and Construction (Diploma)

Program Details  
Provides the skills for employment in the building industry. Students learn to survey and set out building sites, cost estimates and plans, manage construction costs and administer construction contracts. They learn about site safety, timber framing, building structures and construction techniques. During the course students will undertake an industry work placement.

Program Components & Pathway

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry at Certificate IV level requires the equivalent of Australian Year 11 with passes in English & Maths or completion of the Certificate III in Drafting - Civil & Structural Engineering


What You'll Learn in Each Course

In this program, students obtain the training to meet the employment requirements for estimating and supervision in areas of low rise and associated light steel structures. The course provides the practical skills and knowledge to supervise the work and safety on low rise buildings and light steel structure construction sites. Students learn to survey and set out building sites, cost estimates and plans, manage construction costs and administer construction contracts. They learn about the timber framing code, building structures and construction techniques, site safety and building materials. Students also gain the skills and knowledge to manage the operations of commercial and industrial projects as well as low rise residential building sites. Subjects include contract law, building computing, tendering, planning and scheduling and quantity surveying of residential, industrial and commercial building sites.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

Students will have site visits as well as classroom work as part of this qualification. During this course, students undertake a supervised work placement where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can become an estimator, scheduler or site supervisor working under the direction of a builder and with experience, a housing supervisor, project or contract manager, purchasing officer, site clerk/manager, or quantity surveyor.


Further Study & University Options

Successful completion of the Diploma will allow students to enter the Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction, Management & Economics) at Curtin university with up to 18 months of credit.
