About Us

The University of Tasmania was officially established on 1st January 1890, by an Act of the Colony's Parliament and was only the fourth university to be established in nineteenth-century Australia. The University was originally located on the Domain in Hobart. As the University developed, it outgrew its original place and in the early 1940's began to transfer its departments to Sandy Bay, which became the new home for the institution.

Biotechnology

Introduction

This three-year (minimum) full-time or part-time course is offered by the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology and is available at Hobart.

Admission & Prerequisites

Minimum university entrance requirements plus TCE pre-tertiary chemistry (CHM5C) and mathematics (MME5C or MAP5C). For students who have not successfully completed the above chemistry or mathematics subjects, the prerequisite will be met if the student successfully completes the appropriate bridging unit as part of the Science Enabling Course.

Subject prerequisites apply within the degree.

Course Objectives

This course specifically aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, competencies and awareness in preparation for employment in industry and research organizations working in the expanding biotechnology sector as well as for research in higher degrees.


Articulation to/from Course

Credit for relevant units will be given to transferring students.


It is intended that the BBiotech will articulate into the Bachelor of Biotechnology with Honours in an appropriate discipline.

Professional Recognition

Graduates may be eligible for membership of a number of professional organisations.
