Bachelor of Speech Pathology

This course aims to produce graduates who can practice as Speech Pathologists and assess and treat people of all ages with communication and/or swallowing disabilities in a wide range of contexts.

Graduates will be qualified to assess and treat communication disabilities affecting the areas of language, fluency, speech and/or voice.

Client groups range from children who fail to develop normal communication to people who acquire communication disabilities as a result of disease or injury.

Graduates will also be qualified to assist people with feeding or swallowing problems, ranging from a newborn baby with feeding difficulties to an adult with swallowing disability following a brain injury.

There is a focus on developing abilities to work in rural and remote contexts and on working with Indigenous people

There is a shortage of speech pathologists in Australia. Speech pathologists can find rewarding careers in a wide range of settings, including schools, early intervention centres, community health centres, hospitals, rehabilitation units, nursing homes, mental health services, disability services, private practice and universities.

Professional Accreditation

JCU’s Bachelor of Speech Pathology prepares graduates as speech pathologists in accordance with the requirements described in the Speech Pathology Association of Australia’s guidelines for accreditation of speech pathology programs. To achieve this all students are assessed against the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (CBOS) for Speech Pathologists: Entry Level (Speech Pathology Australia, 2001) using COMPASS™: Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology (Speech Pathology Australia, 2006).
