Pass Degree
The Bachelor of Social Science course provides students with the theoretical insights and practical competencies that will enable them to play a creative role in a variety of public and community-based settings. The resources of contemporary psychology and sociology provide crucial theory and practices that enhance the quality of human life and enrich our understanding of the human person. The course offers the opportunity for dialogue between those fields leading to professional competence in the human services sector. The course aims to:

prepare graduates who are committed to the highest ethical standards in their dealings with clients, colleagues and the public;
induct students into their academic disciplines relevant to the study of Sociology and/or Psychology or Behavioural Science;
foster in students a sense of the importance of community service and a willingness to participate in public debates relevant to social, psychological or theological concerns within the Australian society;
demonstrate an ability to work in interdisciplinary teams Honours Degree
Candidates studying Honours will have the opportunity to build on the more basic foundations provided by their first three years in the discipline. The fourth year will require study in advanced units in Sociology and will provide students with the opportunity for engaging in research in a setting that encourages systematic reflection upon the methodology and theory being deployed. It is expected that students who meet the required standard in this course will be advantageously placed to go on to higher degrees.

Professional Recognition
Qld only: Graduates from the Behavioural Science/Counselling combination majors will be eligible to apply for associate membership of the Queensland Counsellors Association and membership of the Australian Association of Pastoral Counsellors.

Prerequisites
Completion of the Bachelor of Social Science pass degree or equivalent, normally within the last five years. The pass degree must have been completed at least a credit average including at least four of the units in the major sequence of the discipline of the Honours course and the student must have satisfied the prerequisites for units to be undertaken in the Honours degree.

Candidates studying Honours will have the opportunity to build on the more basic foundations provided by their first three years in the discipline.
