Overview

Description:
 Increasingly, communities within the Asia Pacific region are having to deal with conflicts, natural disaters and serious sustainable development issues. Aid organisations, national bodies and foreign affairs departments in the Aisa Pacific region, require graduates with the appropriate knowledge and skills to work in these areas. This course brings together subjects from anthropology, political science, geography and social welfare to equip students with the appropriate training needed for work within the context of the Asia Pacific region. Graduates will be prepared for careers in areas such as sustainable development, aid, disaster relief, and planning and social welfare. These areas span the government sector as well as the increasingly significant nongovernment (or NGO) sector.

The Bachelor of Social Science degree is characterised by its diversity and flexibility. Students must major in two disciplines (see relevant major for other discipline structure).

Honours

An Honours program is available for those students who demonstrate high academic performance. Honours consists of an extra year of study and the development of a personal research project and thesis. An Honours degree is usually essential for entry to research higher degrees. The Faculty also offers a wide range of postgraduate study opportunities.

Career Opportunities

This degree is designed to cater to those interested in culture, political systems, society, and also how we as individuals make sense of the world. Social science graduates are equipped to critically analyse information and conduct research that can make a difference at local, national or international level; they can work in areas such as social planning, international aid, cultural heritage, environmental management and allied health professions such as counselling and welfare.

Graduates may pursue careers in government and non-government agencies or multinational corporations that interact with countries, communities or businesses in the Asia Pacific region in fields such as:

diplomacy, cross-cultural communication and negotiation

international conflict, cooperation and trans-border security

disaster management

community aid

international trade

Practical Experience

A priority in teaching archaeology at JCU is to provide students with a wide range of skills and experience. This includes (where possible) participation in site visits and fieldwork projects.

JCU works closely with the Museum of Tropical Queensland, the Australian Heritage Commission and the Heritage branch of the Environmental Protection Agency in archaeological research and training.

Professional Recognition

JCU's anthropology courses at all levels are recognised by the Australian Anthopological Society. JCU's community welfare subjects have been accredited by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Work.
