Career Opportunities

Zooligists work in ecological, educational and conservation related fields including national park management, faunal assessment and species conservation, pest and disease control, university teaching and research, museum collecting and research in zoos and as self-employed consultants.

Practical Experience

JCU houses many national research bodies, with the following closely linked to the School of Marine and Tropical Biology:

Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research

Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Ecology

Marine and Tropical Science Research Facility

Many staff and students work jointly in these centres. The School also has links with Cooperative Research Centres for Tropical Savannas, Great Barrier Reef, Sugar, Estuaries and Aquaculture. Through links with such bodies, students and staff gain valuable practical and research experience, and can access to cutting-edge analytical technologies.

Special Facilities

James Cook University is a remarkable place to study zoology. The School of Marine and Tropical Biology is well equipped to make the most of its ready access to the superb richness of the tropical fauna and diverse environments - reef to rainforest, mangrove to mulga, and wetlands to savanna. We have modern laboratories and field stations in a variety of habitats.
