Overview

Description:
 Occupational therapists are health professionals who assist people to overcome limitations caused by injury or illness, psychological or emotional difficulties, developmental delay or the effects of aging. These therapists are trained to assess an individual’s skills and abilities, and then to work with them to improve their independence, wellbeing and quality of life by enabling occupation.

JCU’s School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences offers a dynamic occupational therapy course that combines subjects from health science, health promotion, professional practice and management.

Special emphasis is given to occupational therapy in rural and remote settings, and students undertake placements each year in a range of rural and urban locations throughout northern Queensland.
 
Duration:
 The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Graduate) can be completed in two years and approximately 16 weeks (depending on the timing of the final fieldwork placement).

 Normal workload expectations are a minimum of 10 hours per week for every subject, including class contact hours, preparation and time spent on assessment tasks.

Prerequisite/s:
 Entry into this program requires that applicants have successfully completed a bachelor degree in nursing or other relevant health professional program and can prove currency of their studies or in practice.
Applicants must demonstrate active involvement in health or health related education in the previous eight years.
 
Additional Entry Requirements:
 Queensland Health requires all health care worker students be immunised against Hepatitis B prior to their first clinical placement.

Career Opportunities

Occupational therapists are in demand in Australia. Graduates are equipped for rewarding careers in: public and private health services, and in promoting well being in rural and urban communities. Occupational Therapists are employed to work in a range of clinical and consultative roles with people who have physical and or mental disabilities across the lifespan (children, adults and the elderly).

Work settings include: public and private hospitals, medical rehabilitation units, community health centres, occupational health centres, aged care facilities, vocational rehabilitation units, independent living centres, private practice, schools, pharmacies and industry.

Professional Accreditation

This program is accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy graduates from JCU are eligible to register for practice in Queensland as occupational therapists through the Occupational Therapists Registration Board of Queensland, and are eligible to become members of OT Australia – The Australian Association of Occupational Therapists.

Graduates are also eligible to register for practice in other states of Australia, in New Zealand and by application internationally.
