Overview


Description:
 This degree has been created to meet the demand in the public hospital system and private pathology laboratories for professionally qualified medical laboratory scientists. It combines the study of biomedical sciences with clinical placements in regional medical laboratories.

This course aims to:

Establish an accredited, professional career path in medical laboratory science;

Support the allied healthcare demands of northern Queensland by providing locally trained graduates;

Provide students with a firm grounding in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology and infectious diseases and immunology. Additional subjects provide grounding in quality assurance, laboratory management and communication;

Allow flexible entry from level 1-3 of the Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences;

Enable entry to applicants with a suitable background and experience in medical technology who require graduate entry upgrade;

Enable research training in the medical sciences.

Career Opportunities

Medical laboratory science graduates will find careers in the public hospital system and private pathology laboratories. There is a high demand for these skills, especially in northern Queensland.

Other employment opportunities exist with public and private laboratories that focus on forensic science, food and water quality, pharmaceuticals and toxicology. Careers in medical research will generally require postgraduate qualifications.

The course has been accredited by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists, enabling graduates to work either in Australia or internationally.
