Outline The Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences (Honours) provides advanced studies in mathematics, at a professional level for students with a strong mathematical background. It also provides students with an introduction to a research program enabling them access to research degrees at universities throughout Australia and internationally. This course provides preparatory studies for PhD study. Career Opportunities Graduates would expect to work in any area of industry or government. This program is also designed to provide you with an introduction to a research program and enables access to research degrees at universities throughout Australia and internationally. RPL and Credit Transfer International students wishing to apply for RPL and Credit Transfer are required to provide syllabus of previous study undertaken at time of applying for course. Not all courses offer RPL and Credit Transfer. Contact the International Student Programs office at international@ballarat.edu.au Objectives Successful completion of this course will give you the foundation, knowledge and skills to: - Develop to a high level of competence the skills acquired in your undergraduate course - Acquire and practise the investigative required in research activities - Gain experience in the assimilation and analysis of the findings of research workers in a particular area of interest - Demonstrate familiarity with the theoretical basis of the work in the course - Become familiar with the latest developments in your area of interest - Increase your skills in explaining and communicating in written and oral form your own work and the work of others - Relate your work to possible applications in industrial or commercial developments - Show an awareness of the ethical and social implications of your area of interest Requirements The course consists of four 15 credit point units - two core units and two elective units, and one full year core 60 credit point unit of value - Research Project and Thesis. A significant proportion (one half) of the work in the Honours Program is related to the completion of the research project. The aim of this is to introduce you to the type of work involved in postgraduate research studies. The research project allows you to pursue an area of interest in some depth while practising the investigative skills that are important in research. In particular, you will use skills involved in finding the latest work published about the area of interest, and in assimilating and analysing this information. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on communicating these findings to other people; you are expected to give seminars on your work and to assemble your work in the form of a project report. International students must meet the following basic entry requirements (see below): · Academic entry requirements · English language entry requirements · At least 18 years of age at the time of the student’s proposed commencement of studies at the university
