The Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional Practice) is an innovative course that has been developed in conjunction with IBM® to produce graduates who have an appreciation of the culture of work as an IT professional. From the second year of the course, you will combine university studies and practical experience with IBM® in an 'Earn As You Learn' program. Units on industry awareness and industry application are delivered in association with IBM® staff. The first year of the course consists of full-time study. During your second and third years, your time will be divided between study (three-quarters of your time) and gaining industry experience with IBM® (one-quarter of your time). As part of the program, you will receive a scholarship of $2000 in your first year, and approximately $7,000 for each of your second and third years. Students who successfully complete three years of the course will be employed full-time by IBM® for the first half of their fourth year. The design of this program means that you will graduate with one year’s work experience, greatly enhancing your employment opportunities. Completion of this course will provide you with a wide variety of career opportunities in small, medium and large businesses, industry and government. In addition, you will have an advantage over most other computing graduates because you will have gained valuable industry experience. In particular, you may wish to apply for a position with IBM®. (Employment by IBM® is on a competitive basis.) International students wishing to apply for RPL and Credit Transfer are required to provide syllabus of previous study undertaken at time of applying for course. Not all courses offer RPL and Credit Transfer. Contact the International Student Programs office at international@ballarat.edu.au Successful completion of this course will give you the foundation, knowledge and skills to: Requirements The Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional Practice) is based on a number of core units, which cover the fundamentals of information technology, such as World Wide Web (WWW) technology, design techniques for multimedia and the internet, Java programming, software engineering, electronic data interchange and networks. The focus is on fundamental concepts that enable you to become a skilled IT professional. These core units are complemented by elective studies. There is a balance between specific knowledge of particular development tools (languages, operating systems, development environments) and general lifelong learning skills, which will ensure that graduates will be able to remain at the forefront of this vibrant and rapidly developing sector.
