Bachelor of Information Technology (Geographic Information Systems)

Overview

Description:
Modern business and society are increasingly computer reliant. In recent years the Internet, the world wide web and computer networks have become essential everyday business tools. The people who make these computer systems work are called Information Technology (IT) professionals. Not surprisingly, the IT industry is one of the world’s prestige industries and IT graduates can expect exciting and rewarding careers, anywhere in the world. All eight Bachelor of Information Technology majors (strands) have been approved by the Australian Computer Society at the highest level, the Professional level.

Within the BInfTech some majors include preparation for Industry Certificates from Cisco (the Cisco Certified Networking Associate) and Microsoft (the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer).

This degree prepares students for work in a wide range of IT intensive industries. It combines a solid basis of computing theory with practical knowledge and skills in software (languages), software engineering, multimedia, databases and networking. Specialising in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

The science of GIS collects data from satellites, aerial photographs, maps and field observations for a variety of applications. For example, GIS has been used extensively to monitor and help solve major ecological and environmental problems, and help private companies manage and allocate staff and equipment. Students use state-of-the-art computer laboratories equipped with the latest GIS and remote sensing software. JCU researchers and students work closely with Townsville and Cairns based agencies that use GIS.

Please note that the testamur for a Bachelor of Information Technology does not show the major studied.

An Honours program is available for those students who demonstrate high academic performance. Honours consists of an extra year of study and the development of a personal research project and thesis. An Honours degree is usually essential for entry to research higher degrees. JCU's School of Maths, Physics & IT also offers a wide range of postgraduate study opportunities and has an active research program.

Honours study involves 24 credit points of specified honours subjects. Please talk with an Academic Advisor about Honours options.

Professional Recognition

JCU’s Bachelor of Information Technology is fully accredited by the Australian Computer Society at the ‘Professional Level’.

Career Opportunities

Graduates use their expertise and practical experience analysing ‘real world’ situations as GIS systems administrators, applications developers, and software engineers in government, mining, agriculture and other industries.
