Overview

Description:
 Teaching can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding of careers. Teachers have the opportunity to shape a child's learning and development, be they pre-schoolers or adolescents, or any age in between.

The School of Education at James Cook University offers world-class teacher education. It enjoys a forty-year history of teacher education and has forged dynamic partnerships with schools throughout northern Queensland. The primary program focuses on Years 1-7. You will be equipped to be 'a general practitioner' to teach across all curriculum areas in primary schools. At the same time, the program provides opportunities to specialise in particular subject areas.

Programs are also available for the preparation of specialist teachers of health and physical education in primary schools. Students can also undertake focus studies in middle schooling and special needs.

Career Opportunities

Primary school education graduates teach years 1-7 across all curriculum areas in state and independent schools, including the Catholic school system.

Teaching is a portable qualification and teachers are in demand throughout Australia and overseas. Many JCU graduates have taken the opportunity to travel and teach in Europe, Asia and North America.

Additional career opportunities exist in government departments (children's services, family services, education, health), community development and welfare agencies, educational attractions, and support services for families.

Practical Experience

An integral part of becoming a teacher at JCU is gaining practical experience. Students teach in schools and other educational settings. Professional experience commences in first year. Students have the opportunity to undertake professional experience in a range of settings and locations. Students must obtain a 'Blue Card' (refer to Additional Entry Requirements) before commencing professional experience.

Professional Recognition

Successful JCU graduates can register with the Queensland College of Teachers.
