Overview

Description:
 This course focuses on teaching Years 4-9. Graduates are equipped to teach across a range of essential curriculum areas in primary and middle schools including English, mathematics, society and environment and science. Gaining professional experience is integral for trainee teachers and at JCU practical teaching commences in the first year of study. Students will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing their professional experience.

Career Opportunities

Graduates teach Years 1 to 7 across all curriculum areas, in state and independent schools, including the Catholic school system. Teaching is a portable qualification and teachers are in demand throughout Australia and overseas. Many JCU graduates have taken the opportunity to travel and teach in Europe, Asia and North America. Additional career opportunities exist in government departments (children’s services, family services, education, health), community development and welfare agencies, educational attractions, and support services for families.

Practical Experience

An integral part of becoming a teacher at JCU is gaining practical experience. Students teach in schools and other educational settings. Professional experience commences in first year. Students have the opportunity to undertake professional experience in a range of settings and locations. Students must obtain a 'Blue Card' (refer to Additional Entry Requirements) before commencing professional experience.

Professional Recognition

Successful JCU graduates can register with the Queensland College of Teachers.
