Bachelor of Business (Economics and Regional Development)

Overview

Description:
Why do Economists get paid more than nurses? Why is the Chinese economy growing so rapidly and how is it likely to affect Australia? Why do prices always seem to go up? Why do we have to pay taxes? How can we organize production so that businesses can earn a decent profit without “harming the environment”? These are the kinds of questions economists answer. Economics is a social science that studies the way society distributes scarce resources such as land, labor, raw materials and machinery to produce goods and services. As such it provides the analytical basis for decision making and public policy both in business and government. Economists consider topics such as the environment, water use, poverty, crime, health, education, energy, productivity, profitability, exchange rates, interest rates, government budgets, industry regulation and microeconomic reform.

The demand for economists in Australia and internationally is growing in both the private and public sectors as concern increases over sustainable development, unemployment, inflation, interest rates, the current-account balance and microeconomic reform. JCU offers training for professional economists recognized by major employers such as the Commonwealth and State Treasury and the Reserve Bank.

The course includes foundation subjects in the areas of accounting, economics, data analysis, customer experience, business law, business information systems, management and personal professional skills. These subjects are then complemented by specialist topics in microeconomics, regional economic growth, managerial economics, International trade, forecasting and econometrics.

The Bachelor of Business offers choice and flexibility, with the option to combine Sports and Events Management with a second major from Accounting, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Management and Entrepreneurship, Tourism Management, Business Law and Communication Design. Study in non-business disciplines is available to cater for individual interests or a specialist career goal.
