Bachelor of Applied ScienceAssessment (Internat.) Assignments, group work, exams Outline Geology is the study of the Earth, including its history and composition, and of the dynamic systems that shape the Earth’s surface. The geology program is broad-based but allows students to specialise in Exploration Geology or Environmental Geology. Enrolment in the Geology program will see you undertake one core Geology unit (Earth Science) plus two science electives and one other elective in the first teaching period. The two science electives are chosen from chemistry, food science and nutrition, environmental management, and Australian ecosystems. Later in the year, specialisation in Geology will allow you to take an elective as well as your three core Geology units. Career Opportunities Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science course are widely recognised by employing agencies as having excellent applied skills in their chosen field. Past graduates of the Geology program have found rewarding careers in the mining industry, government survey organisations and as engineering and environmental geologists, in the petrochemical sector and as engineering and environmental geologists. RPL and Credit Transfer International students wishing to apply for RPL and Credit Transfer are required to provide syllabus of previous study undertaken at time of applying for course. Not all courses offer RPL and Credit Transfer. Contact the International Student Programs office at international@ballarat.edu.au Objectives The Geology program provides expert education for students who wish to pursue professional careers in mineral and oil exploration, extractive industries, environmental science and hydrology, and other areas associated with the Earth Sciences. The prime focus is upon the acquisition of the practical skills of rock and mineral identification and description and the acquisition of geological data in the field. The program aims to produce graduates who have: * a sound understanding of the functioning of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere; • a good working knowledge of rocks, minerals, and fossils - their characteristics and importance in Geology and to the functioning of a modern civilisation; * a sound understanding of the formation of the Earth, its tectonics, chemistry and physics and its evolution to its present situation; * a good grounding in environmental aspects and/or mining geology, coupled with the ability to link these facets with their training in the Earth Sciences; * the ability to plan and manage Earth resources and understand a range of issues and problems relating to man's exploitation of such resources. Requirements Year 1 - four 15 CP units per teaching period selected from the chosen program allowing at least one elective. Years 2 & 3 - student’s chosen program continues allowing at least one elective in each teaching period. Students may take science units as their electives. Electives may be chosen on the basis of program recommended lists. Alternatively, a free selection may be made. In all cases, students must consult with the relevant Program Coordinator. Recommended structures of the four BAppSc programs are listed below. Students may take at least one elective in the chosen program in any teaching period. These may be single electives or part of a sequence of electives, constituting a minor strand e.g., in Computing. Details are provided in the program structures below.
