Applied Fashion Design and Technology

Program Details  
Provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to develop and produce original clothing designs to suit local conditions and trends. You will learn to cut and machine sample garments, grade patterns, assemble, fit and custom make clothing, assist in design development, source materials and evaluate contractors. Supervisory skills for both small and large production businesses are also included. As part of the course students will undertake 200 hours of practical work experience in the fashion design industry.

Qualifications Available in this Program (depending on your entry & exit points)

  • Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Technology
  • Diploma of Fashion Design and Technology
  • Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

The equivalent of Australian Year 10.

Work Experience, Activities & Events

Work experience forms a substantial part of this course which ensures that students develop “hands on” skills to equip them for work in the major career paths of the clothing industry. In completing this program students are required to undertake 200 hours of practical work experience in the fashion design industry. This component of the training is an essential, highly valuable and culturally rich experience for students.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can gain employment as Garment Tradesperson, Machinist, Sales Representative & Assistant Pattern Maker/Grader Supervisor, Quality Officer, Assistant Production Control Officer, Sales Representative, Designer or Cutter Retail/Shop Designer, Production Manager, Industrial Designer or Illustrator in the clothing sector of the industry.


Further Study & University Options

Successful completion of the course will allow entry to the Bachelor of Arts (Fashion & Textile Design) at Curtin University with up to 12 months credit.
